15.41.27 - Mark
Remember the months following 9/11/01? Specificaly people being pissed off at the Red Cross for taking all the blood they didn't need? Well know I know why. Today my school hade a blood drive and thinking that it might do some good with a mere hour (thats a hint) of my time, I signed up. Then came today. Today I was at school and was waiting to be taped out. I signed up fairly late so I was thinking third period, maybe forth. Either way I was fine with it. I had gone though the trouble of getting breakfast after waking up early, for me anyways, and didn't have any caffiene like I usualy do. First period comes, they set up, second, some of the friends I have in the group putting on the drive leave class, third I know thier taking blood as I could see it though the gym doors. Luch I have another friend helping and he came in, and he made a comment like "You better go now, they aren't calling any one out" OK I'm a little stirred about it but I go to my forth period teacher and tell them that I was signed up and haden't been called out yet, and that I heard they we're calling any one out. From there I've got an easy test, 15 minutes to waste time until two. Since I still haden't been called out I asked to go down. He said fine and I went. Of course thats the exact moment they came to get me. [insert mild to moderate irratation]. So I go down and fill out the paper work, notice a few of my friends and go grab a snack as they had a nice spread. Then I go off to catch my friends, and I think it was something like this:
"Given yet? [motions to blood donation chairs]"
"No, still waiting. You?"
"Just got here, how long have you been waiting?"
"What time is it"
"2:10 [pause] about an 2 hours"
[eyes pop out]
"Whats you're number"
"113"
[Looks at my own number: 139]
[eyes pop out again]
That should sum it up, he got into the donation chair at about 3:05 when I left, with a line ahead of me and at least 40 minutes to draw the pint. Then the other friend I talked to who donated said he went in at 12:30 and basicaly had to kill people to donate his own blood before school let out.
As I said, I know why people felt pissed off about the Red Cross when they let that blood waste away
