Dam, I missed enterprise (well most of it anyways and there's no point in watching now that thats happened) Stupid Gforce and WhiteCap visualizers distracting me. Not that I could get past the insane American Idiot viewers that are my brothers to get to the TV. I hate missing good TV because other people want to kill brain cells watching material not suited to the Bin Ladens and Husanes of the world.

Well I think the update (OmniWeb 4.2) helped some in my blogger editing pages, but we'll see.
Also, and propbably more important is we went to see the soon to be our own house today. We got keys this morning and went in this afternoon for planning. I'll have a large space (or two) but I still feel like I'm coming out with the short straws.
23.36.29 - Mark
BTW, Omniweb is being a major PITA in blogger. Maybe I ought to update to the latest version. I'm having to hit post and publish one, reenter my material then hope it publishes the second time round.

Now that I'm thinking about it, its probably a good thing that I don't have a credit card to buy music with. Because I'm finding all this music of my (fairly few) years gone by. I've listened to my parents extensive vinyl collection, many now defunct cassette tapes, a few handfuls of CDs and many, many MP3s steming from each collection. To put it as Yoda might say to: want leads to buying, buying leads to excess, excess leads to more buying. On the other hand I would like legal copies to replace some of those old tapes, I still like a lot of that music.

I'm rediscovering my inital intrest in OS X, its a nice, rock solid OS that hasn't given me a problem since I got it up to 10.1.5 (strike a hard crash due to Internet Exploder) iTunes 4 is still very cool and I've had some fun browsing there, wish I had a credit card tho' I want to try and download something to see how far I can take it.

I love Apple ability to push me further and further into obselence. I was mostly right about it not working on my system, I'd have to boot into OS X and even then the processor requirement might be too high. Accualy I might try that after I post this. I was right about it using the newly created AppleID. I wasn't right about the new iPod. I've been thinking that they would come up but I wasn't expecting them this soon. I'd be supprised if they used the same scheme I have posted on AF in the past but I think it just goes to show that Apple is really working with OEMs to get parts before they come onto the open market. I like the old style better tho' The new model looks like a bar of soap.
19.14.02 - Mark
And I thought I was getting somewhere too. Well I plugged the twiddler adapter into a PB 165 and started it up, but it doesn't like me and when I hit a button on the Twiddler it pulled into a hard crash. So then I tried making the ADB (power) and Serial (data) connection on seperate systems I didn't get anywhere. this is almost a big PITA as the PBFH was (note that it isn't working either :P)

I hate Sundays, why? Because everyone uses the day to spend time worshiping their favorite "God" who doesn't do anything for them, doesn't do anything for anyone else, sparks violent meaningless wars, and just sours all activities on Sundays. I'm bored out of my freaking mind because not only is there hnothing to do, its also my brothers (and by coincidence, great gandmother's) birthday, so he gets his way and I get bored out of my mind. What a wonderful day ::)
15.21.35 - Mark
I'm watching Woz's webcast from NC State, and even though I've seen a lot of what he's talking about before its a cool event. I hope they're capturing this as a regular QT movie so others can view it after the fact. His early days, learning about electronics, his pranks, his days at HP, right now he's talking about Raskins (who taught them about writing manuals) and the GUI interface. Woz really is a neat individual, Apple or no Apple

I feel like an idiot.
Quote from the Rust-oleum Metallic Black Metal Finish can:
"Dries tact free in less than 10 minutes and is fully dry in 30 minutes."
The paint has been dry for 45 minutes! Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go take off some mesh.
23.25.25 - Mark
Sue me, I'm impatient. (That means I went ahead and laid down the black metal flake paint about an hour ago) I did do it how they said to, even passes about 10" away from the surface. I had been cutting the mesh on the PB plastics and I wasn't picking up any paint so I went ahead and decided to go for it since theres a fairly big strom coming in from the east and it was now or next week. I did take photos of the mesh on the plastics, and I'll take some more when I take it off. What I did lift up looked perfect, if most of the plastics turn out the way the sampled parts did I'll have another AF worthy. I'm going to try and be very patient and let the black coat dry correctly (the full suggested trying time) before I take the mesh off.
17.48.14 - Mark
Despite a really bad beginning this morning (I woke up for school at 8 AM and had 10 minutes to get dressed, get to the high school, and arrive at first period) Today has been really good.
I had the time and the paint was dry so I went ahead and masked off several parts, each having no fewer than a dozen pieces of mesh. I won't be painting it tonight tho' I'm still planing on letting it set at least another 24 hours before I paint with the black. Assuming I don't mess up with the black metal flake I should have it looking excellent this time round. The other thing is that I'm looking into recelling a 1x0 battery, I've already cracked one but I need to look at it closely.
Plus some money issues might be resolved, I'm selling a Transwarp IIe accelerator for $100 which should allow me to get a few things from All Electronics.
And better still is that the loan my parents took out for a real house was approved about an hour ago, and we're going to close on it next week. Not Quite the "by May 1st" I was told but still, the 2nd sure ain't that bad.
12.40.33 - Mark
Dam Twiddler. I got out a multimeter and got the right wires- at least accoding to the MIT documents I've been working from (here and here), and I tried to figure out the ASCII schematics but still no dice. I swear I'm about to give up on the idea. Maybe inspiration will stirk when I'm catching some zzzzzzzz.
23.36.24 - Mark
After knowing about Apple's "Music to your ears" announcement announcement, and the more recent .Mac and Apple ID unification notice earlier last week, I can't help but wonder if the two are related, maybe a music service added to the current .Mac deal? Then again I can't help but think that this is going to require 10.2 (I barely even use 10.1) and I'll be left in the qust in any case. :P

Finaly a good use for the military's "Bunker Buster" technology. (No war making required, unless ET is closer to home than we thought)

Good news (for a change), I got the second coat of green on at the cost of another $3.50 (that metal flake green is just burning my paper green, thats the third can I've used!) Looking at it again just know I should have it this time, the weather was beautiful for painting today, at least after 7PM. I think I'm going to let it sit for 48 hours, or about 48 hours. I think I may mask with the mesh after Woz's webcast at NC State, and take the time to do it right. Then I'll apply a coat of metal flake black (not as expencive) and tdo it in light coats, then comback each hour for another coat. Then next monday I'll go for a clear coat. Hopefuly that will work, hopefuly
22.19.28 - Mark
well, repainted today. Tho' it might not have been a good idea with the wind blowing, I'm probably going to have to apply a second coat of green to have that layer look good in the final product. That metal flake green is thinning my wallet at $3.50 a can. I'm also going to mask really carefuly this time around. The gloss clear coat is nice, I sprayed the hammerblack phone earlier and it looks fine, speaking of the phone [scans a couple images]
22.29.56 - Mark
All of the paint is off, and the battery up to 6 minutes of charge. Now to start painting tonight of not to...
17.09.00 - Mark
Most of the paint is off, and I've got the new cans of paint (another metal flake green, black metalic, and glossy clear coat) Don't know what when I'll paint them tho'

I hate when the 'net goes down. About 6:15 PM EST my DSL line went down, ok Sprint is a comercial product, I should expect some downtime everyone in a while (this is the first time my line has really been down since I got it installed like 7 months ago) but about 5 minutes after I stop messing with the modem and my own settings I get a call from my dad who's at work. Suprise his office is down. Now thats weird since they use a company that isn't even leasing from Sprint. Even more supprise is that their corporate tech guy had called him to inform him that all the companies sites are down.
Now heres the real kicker, theres no coverage of it, and an hour and a half later all is fine. Weird.

Its funny how a simple paraghaph about Mac software can put a positive spin on a likely mundane Monday Morning
From the blog at Bill Palmer.net (April 20, 2003):
Snood 3.0 beta 3 for MacOS X
For awhile, it seemed as if Snood and Quark XPress were going to battle it out for the dubious distinction of being the last remaining vital Macintosh application without a native MacOS X version. Well the race isn't over yet, but with this month's new beta release, Snood has pulled comfortably ahead of XPress in achieving native OS X compatibility, proving that even a lone college professor who writes games in his spare time can accomplish more than the developers at Quark.

Curse these mornings. This is the second time in a row that I've been up to see the sunrise on a school day (thankfuly thats nots counting my extra short Spring Break) Tho' today I had the magical ability to remain in bed but still I was in the shower by 7 AM, horrors of horrors.
On a totaly unrelated note I'm having some success at reconditioning a 1x0 battery, BatteryAmnesia is a cool little application. I've gone from dead to 4 whole minutes of power in 3 discharges. WooHoo!

Bad News Time-
The PowerMatrix might have a money related snag, that honestly I don't want to go into right now.
18.21.24 - Mark
Rubbing Alcohol is your friend. it only took most of Clear and Present Danger to get though the clear coat but its getting there. I need some more but at least what I have is working. OTOH I definatly know what those iBook painters are talking about when they say its slow going.
15.48.19 - Mark
I'll put it this way, Medusa might look better than the PowerMatrix. That satin clear coat killed it, and I really should have used the metal flake black. Then theres the fact that half of it was rubbing off. Simply put I'm going to have to restart. I'm also going to get some test plastics. Don't know when I'll get to Lowe's again but I think I'm going to need a good deal of something to kill the three layers of paint.
Also cracked the Newton. Good News is that it isn't dead, bad news is that I can't hack in a backlight and furtermore I made a slight erro on reassembly. Nothing Major tho', thankfuly.
Maybe if I do some work on the twiddler interface I'll have some good luck.
18.03.55 - Mark
[nurse] "It's horrible doctor, simply horrible!"
[doctor] "Yes, but it's better than I feared it would be"
Well the flat black on metal flake green looks good, where it worked. The top and blttom are nice. theres a wonderful effect but the other two panels well forget the grid, whered I put that black paint.
17.54.29 - Mark
You know those movies where the doctor has a patient who's face has been wrapped in bandages for months and months and they decided to take off the wrappings to reveal the deformed face? Well I'm bracing my self for that kind of horror since I'm about to go take off the mesh on the PowerMatrix.
16.18.07 - Mark
Just an update on the PowerMatrix, the black coat is on. I decided that a day was enough and went ahead and masked it off. I already wish I would have done a better job masking it off but we'll see how it turns out. Might be a neat effect. perhaps fading- green in/green out? If the black sets well tonight I'll hit it with a clear coat tomarrow afternoon.
01.46.44 - Mark
This is so true
01.02.49 - Mark
OK, I got really bored after dissesembling it, and rain is in the forecast for Saturday morning and afternoon so about 10:30 PM Friday I went ahead and laid the base coat of the metal flake green and it looks nice. Forgot the battery cover but its only $3.50 a can at walmart. Easy enuff to get another can next time I go there. So far it looks nice, a pile of keys didn't get a total coat but I'll take a closer look when I got for the next layer (flat black) I also did a test strip of the mess tape and it looks like it will work well. I'm kinda regretting not getting the metal flak black I saw at lowes, because the metal flake green looks simply amazing I'm sure the satin clear coat will take some of the effect away but, it looks great at the moment. I needs a good deal of light to reflect but I can imangine it under some bright sun light. I'll try and snap some photos before the next coat goes on but I already know that justice will not be done. It just looks that good.
18.56.26 - Mark
Got the paint today, hunter green for the system base coat and flat black to create the grid work. I also got a small can of metal flake green for the keys that I may choose to apply to the entire case, not sure about that yet. Then I got a flat clear coat to protect everything. I would have gone with glossy but that collects dust. When going though the paint isle at Lowe's I noticed some rolls of fiberglass mesh tape that is supposed to be used for dry wall. But I'm a hardware hacker and I ignore "suggested" and "supposed" at will. The stuff has the exact grid work I want, and that means I grapped some. Since it's supposed to stop raining tomarrow I might do a total take apart and run the plastics in the dish washer tonight (see Mercury at Applefritter.com for more on the dishwasher cleaning idea)
Then in the morning (or afternoon) I'll hit the case with the green base coat, either metal flake or hunter green. Then for safety I'll let it sit a couple days and come back for the black coat. Another couple days and I'll be back for the clear coats and I can give it a couple more days to dry. Hopefuly by then I'll also have my green CCFT backlight and I can do the full reassembly. By then I may look into rechargeable batteries for a recell. I'd assume that would land me in the last days of April and I can have a couple weeks to get photos developed and posted online in time for the inspiration's sequel's release date (May 15). Maybe by then I'll also have some creative solution for a trackball and lettering on the keys.

Finished the sanding earlier, it's really, really smooth. I uses a combo of 60 grit and 220 grit. I know a gental change would have been better but it turned out fine (and it was on hand). I would have done the first painting (techno green) today but never got to Lowe's to get the paint. Besides the weather turned bad anyways, tons of wind, serious chance of rain not good for painting at all. I did however find everything I needed at All Electronics Corp. Need to bug my dad about letting me place the order with a credit card. I also didn't stop at one green CCFT, I went for a couple 12" blue tubes with inverters and a blue tube like the green one I need for the hack (I'll either do a second laptop in blue or find another use for it.) IIRC it will be $40- $50 shipped but it's worth it, I wanted the blue tubes anyways to see about getting a basic case design for the Gibson style server. Tho' I might place an order for an orange tube as well. Some of my initial design ideas for the Phoenix included a light of some sort in the base of the system with it reflecting towards the MLB. There are simply a ton of diferent lighting concepts that play out on the Phoenix, many that can't even begin to be descriped or photographed. That reminds me, I need to pick up those photos I took.

I went, I competed, I failed. Fun experiance but I didn't like the choise of problems. One of my problems was a PC that didn't display video, and I had an AGP card that looked like it was burtout, but rather than apply KISS and find unseated RAM I said it was the AGP. I should have paid attention to "How did you fix the problem" and realized that I could have fixed it. Then there was the IDE problem, where all I needed to do was reset the BIOS in 15 minutes (I was getting there when time was called). The other two problems were simple reconnect the floppy the *right way* and push down on the power supply connector. Then again I pushed down on that connector and the PC brought up some other problem (stupid little beeping sound)
Of course I was fixing problems before the competition. Last night in the hotel room I went to tirn on a light and got one click, two click 3 clicks. After that I think it went like this:
[light one on]
[light one off, light to remains off]
Shoot burt out
[light one on, light two supposedly getting power]
[I look at light two's socket and see nothing but filiment]
That's got to be a fire hazard
[touches light 2's light shade]
Whoa, Magic smoke
I swear when I called down to house keeping they were laughing at my story. I mean no glass, just the filiment, and noone had really messed up the room yet. It was one of those moments when I wish I had a camera.
19.04.31 - Mark
I'm at a skills competition right now. I still can't believe they let me out of school to come and play with 'puters. Plus I get free lodging at a hotel with high speed 'Net access. Tho' TANSTAFL, and my price is that the free shelter and broadband is that it's on the 24th floor of the hotel, and there are 4 elevators for at least 1500 guests. And many of those 1500 guests are doing the same things that I am. If my legs don't give out climbing the 24 stories, I will certainly have a new respect for firemen and other rescue workers. (Note: I'm not waiting an hour for an elevator)

Technicaly this is the first day of Spring break, but it isn't. I hapen to live in a part of NC with an incompetent school district that decided to call off school several times when it wasn't called for. So today I had school, a painfuly long day of school filled with tons of under achievement, while being tortured with the knowlege that it was a beautiful spring day outside the delipadated school walls.
And what made this a painfuly long day willed with under acievement? Hypocritical math teachers, a "Lets go color posters" gym teacher and a nutcase ELP teacher who doen't believe in clocks.
The math teacher, who is nice enough to tell us not to become slaves to the graphing calculators, but is happy to chew students out when they use their brains. Come on you want me to show work for
b (sin A) / a = (sin B)
when I need a calculator to get Sin A and b and a are already given. If so please hold while a beat my head against a book until I forget when 2 + 2 equals
Then theres the gym teacher that had us coloring. Now I'm still trying to figure out how the hell a push up is different in Iowa than it is in North Carolina but coloring?!?! How the *&^% ios coloring going to help me keep up a health lifestyle post-high school? Maybe I need to go back to the first grade to figure that one out. Tho' I'll admit bringing dip out in front of an entire class of high schoolers is very creative, talk about providing to minors. Thge school has a big enough problem with controlling the *&^% without teachers puting it in arms distance of students.
Then theres the good old ELP teacher who doesn't use clocks (first rant of many) and teaches a politics class with more biased agasint republicans than the press is baised in this war on Iraq. Yes let's raise students with a sound knowlege of politics as long as they support republicans.
I think thats all for now. Some people can be so [beep] stupid and I seem to be at the center of it.

Yeah, I'm bored, and yes I'm reading random blogs in the recently updated list at Blogger.com. I was tring to make a keychain out of a Pentium Processor (a propper use of it I might add) but the drill I had was under powered. Maybe I'll go zone out in front of the TV for a while.

Of the 3 'books 2 should work, 2 dont. and the WGS 80 boots but its a one drived, one horned flying beige floppy eater that doen't have A/UX like it should. Apple sems to be buying something other than software companies maybe that would get Apple some more attention and/or kill off some flame wars. hehehe "what has Apple made that was any good" "only 25% of the new cds on the market". Added a red LED to the Charred Mouse. The epoxy is setting right now and I snapped a couple more photos. I was thinking about making it work with the signal but insted I just tied it in with the 5 v lines. The really weird/insane part is that it was all "Hack and Pray" I still don't have my multimeter but it isn't dead. I'll reassemble tommarow and take some more photos, maybe I'll take some of my new toys as well so I can finish up the roll and drop them off for processing this weekend.

Yesterday was busy, so was today. I've been finishing up a report or Catch-22 and the contrivercy I seen in its pages. I turned it in earlier today and to put it briefly (something I obviously didn't do in the paper) ended up with 6 pages more than I needed, IOW 9 pages when I needed 3.Oh well, it is fairlky long at Heller makes a lot of points that seem to be as important today as they did when it was published. I think this is also field trip week, every day this week I'm going to spend time between 8 AM and 3 PM on an official school outing. Mainly bowling but tomarrow I'm going to "career day" or as I understand it- get-out-of-class-to-listen-to-idiots-at-the-community-college. Then I'm also out for half of next week as well, somehow the school made the mistake of agreeing to letting me out of school for two days to play with computers. For all of their shortcommings that isn't too bad. Then again it is windows...
BTW my payment for the 540c shipped yesterday and I should have it by Friday. Woohoo!

It's Alive! (I really love saying that). Finished flashin the Radeon a little while ago and tested it on an Optiquest monitor (native VGA) and it manaeged an amazing 2048x1196 at Millions of color or something like that. Its nice. A little bit more and I'll have a very nice system that might even be LAN party worthy.
Its kinda sad that for $200 (or to be fair to the final product) $500 I can build a system that can easily beat out newer systems that go for the same price anymore. Maybe I'll have to finish my upgrades and I can test it compared to other systems.
14.26.16 - Mark
I'm back, have been for a couple of hours now. Since I haven't blogged since late Thursday night heres the recap:
Friday, too much school. I did on the other hand get the Radeon Flashed. jammed my finger and my arm got messed up but nothing major. Got home and proptly left. Camp was mostly set up by the time I got there (they had left at noon) so we were lazy for a few hours.
Saturday morning it rained ended up soaking my tent, no not the outside, inside. At least it didn't last long so I did get to dry it out, FTMP. Did some different events, mostly brain dead. That night I was reminded what stars look like. Went to sleep in a slightly damp bed.
Sunday woke up too early, got some food packed up, ate and left. Got home about noon and I've been doing some light surfing since then. About 10 minutes ago I got out the radeon and put it into the Phoenix and I'm copying the Mac flasher over to it now. Then I decided to do a blog entry that brings me up to now.
I may put up some photos of the trip later this week. I got bored on Friday night so I messed around with some settings on my Canon AE-1. Long exposures and stuff like that. If theres anything good I'll see about putting it online when I get the hammered phone and mouse taken care of.
12.03.01 - Mark
Just reassembled the phone, looks great. Battery sticks a bit and the paint probably needs to dry a bit more but over all it looks great. Just needs one thing- bright blue LEDs (and possibly a fresh- techno font for the keypad) As I said, hopefully I'll have pictures next week.
23.53.46 - Mark
Going camping, you know that thing, its done outside, it's [shock] away from technology[/shock]. I should get the Radeon card particialy flashed at school during lunch but other than that don't expect anything here until Sunday at the soonest.

Now name the 4 presidents that helped all of these decisions (except contributed to #1).
Heres a hint 2 share a name with a plant that needs trimming (one made the mistake of reproducing), one had a bit too much fun with an intern in his second term (admittedly he did a lot of good before that), and one should have stuck with acting.

Today has been long and drawn out, but I did get some hacking done. I dug up that can of Hammered Metal black paint and sprayed an old Nokia Cell Phone and an ADB mouse I had laying around. I'm letting them finish drying but the phone plastics look great already- just a little wet at the edges. The Mouse looks fine as well, I'm thinking of finding a red LED and adding it in to the mouse so that it goes with the Phoenix and the keyboard I did for her a while back. I didn't do the cables but I should still have some black paint around here, in any case thats easy enought to do. I'll have to de gunk the mouse a little bit as the rollers didn't come out (bad, very bad) and they have some paint on them but they should both turn out fine. I also shot a good part of a roll of film so I should have some pictures. I'm going camping this weekend so I should be droping off some film next week anyways. Also, my family's offer for the house we liked was accepted today. I could have a real lab again by May Day. As I said its been a good day.
